Frequently Asked Questions

Biodegradability & Compostability

What’s the difference between biodegradable and compostable?
If a product is 'biodegradable', it simply means that it will breakdown into carbon dioxide, water and biomass relatively quickly as a result of the action of bacteria.

‘Compostable’ products are biodegradable—but the key difference is that a compostable product, when broken down, will also release valuable nutrients into the soil. Hence, compostable products will result in fertiliser.

How should the products be disposed of?
Ideally, all GreenWave products should be disposed of in commercial or household compost. Where composting is not available, all products are suitable for recycling (with the exception of cornstarch Cutlery which should be disposed of as ordinary garbage).

If neither composting nor recycling is an option, all GreenWave products are perfectly suitable for ordinary garbage disposal, as they will completely breakdown in landfill.

How long does it take for the products to compost?
This varies depending on factors such as temperature, humidity and whether the products are disposed of in a commercial composting facility or household compost.

In a commercial composting facility, the bagasse-based Serving Solutions and Serving Containers will decompose after about 12 days, whereas the cornstarch-based Cutlery and recycled-paper-based Cup Carriers will take between 45 and 90 days to compost. If disposed of in household composting, products will take approximately 6 months to compost.

Why should I buy biodegradable & compostable products?
For a variety of reasons. Firstly, you will be helping the environment. The environmental benefits of using our products include: reducing landfill, conserving natural resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (compared with plastic and paper alternatives).

Secondly, by demonstrating your green commitment, you stand to gain a distinct marketing advantage over your competitors, as more and more consumers today are demanding green solutions.

Product Composition & Origins

What are ‘Bagasse’ products?
Bagasse is a fibrous substance derived from sugarcane. It is a bi-product of the production of sugar. ThinkEco’s range of Serving Solutions and Serving Containers contain bagasse as well as bamboo and reed pulp. These natural, renewable substances account for 96% of the product composition. Water and a biodegradable mixture account for 2.3%.

What are ‘cornstarch’ products?
ThinkEco’s range of biodegradable and compostable Cutlery is composed of 85% cornstarch, which is a fine-grained flour made from corn. Corn is an annually renewing crop. Chitosan, a naturally occurring ingredient, accounts for 8% of the product composition, while edible additives make up the remaining 7%.
